Born in Buffalo, N.Y. 6 May 1833. Served as lieutenant colonel of the 21st Regiment, N.Y.S.V., the first Buffalo regiment recruited for service during the Civil War, then as colonel of the 94th Regiment, N.Y.S.V. At the end of the war he was mustered out as brigadier-general and major-general by brevet.
